Happy 30th Birthday Mamie (August 3, 1983)

“I was an optimistic person,” she said, “really bossy, gregarious and outspoken.”

She grew up playacting. “We were always putting on costumes,” she recalled, and soaking up beauty tips from her mother’s hair and makeup man. “He was a drag queen,” she recalled, “who brought us a Carmen Miranda fruit hat and dresses with big trains. I liked parading around in them in front of people.”

On such occasions, “Mamie would be the director and the star of the show — and the usher,” her sister Grace recalled affectionately. “But she would always put me in the featured role. I was the sickly child, and she would save me. She was always wanting to save the day. That’s what was great about her.”
